Deadpool & Wolverine movie managed to set a North American box office record in its opening weekend. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film achieved the highest-grossing opening weekend box office figures of all time for an R-rated film.
As reported by Variety, Sunday (28/7), Deadpool & Wolverine generated US$205 million. This achievement was obtained from the film’s screening in the North American region.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s box office earnings shifted Deadpool (2016) as the previous record holder with US$132 million. Deadpool 2 (2018) which was originally in second place has now shifted to third place with US$125 million.
This impressive achievement also became a new record this year. Deadpool & Wolverine’s opening weekend figures also surpassed Inside Out 2 to become the biggest in 2024.
The third Deadpool film is ranked 8th best debut in history, ahead of Black Panther (2018) and only slightly below Jurassic World (2015) and The Avengers (2012).
Deadpool also became the 9th film in history to collect box office figures above US$200 million in its opening weekend.
Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine’s domestic achievements are complemented by international box office figures that are no less massive.
The only MCU film to be released in 2024 earned US$233.3 million from the international market. That figure makes Deadpool & Wolverine earn US$438 million globally in its opening weekend.
The initial box office achievement of the film starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman immediately ranked sixth in the highest-grossing films of 2024.
That amount is also enough to exceed the production costs of Deadpool & Wolverine, which are said to have reached US$200 million, while the promotional costs were up to US$100 million.
On the other hand, Deadpool & Wolverine also helped the MCU set a new record. The superhero franchise officially became the first franchise to collect a total of US$30 billion from the box office of all releases globally.
Deadpool & Wolverine was directed by Shawn Levy. The script for the film was written by Ryan Reynolds with Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. They were previously also writers for Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018).
The film Deadpool 3 stars Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the main duo. In addition to the two, the film also stars Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen, Dafne Keen, and several other surprise actors.
Deadpool & Wolverine is rated R-rated, making it the first MCU film to do so as other releases were rated PG-13.
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to hit theaters on July 24, 2024.
